Garbage Pail Kids are a series of collecting cards developed and sold by Topps Chewing Gum, Inc., famous makers of baseball cards and other collectible card series. Initially, the Garbage Pail Kids (GPKs) were an inside joke for the company, and they were meant to parody the then-wildly-popular Cabbage Patch Kids dolls. A savvy salesman decided to market the cards and they became big sellers. Crude, rude, and sometimes downright disgusting, the GPKs are certainly different from most other collecting cards. Cabbage Patch Dolls are still quite an important brand in the doll world, though they never again reached the popularity they enjoyed at their peak in 1982. Similarly, Garbage Pail Kids cards have continued a loyal following, with new series introductions every few years.
