Collection of fossils of the Paris Basin

Museu Nacional

Museu Nacional
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

In January 1872, D. Pedro II was presented with a collection of fossilized shells of marine bivalves from the Eocene - 45 million years - of the Paris Basin, among which are exemplars of Cardita imbricata Lamarck. Currently, this collection is considered rare because of the destruction of fossiliferous deposits on the outskirts of the city of Paris.
