The history of this piece in the Yeh collection starts with a short inscription by Ye Yanlan. Later Ye Gongchao, Ye Yanlan's great grandson, added a much longer inscription that records the history of the piece in the family's collection. Gongchao recalls first seeing the title of the work at age six, when his father supervised him in copying the list of artworks in the collection. Gongchao then recounts that the family lost four trunks of paintings and calligraphy, one of which contained this piece, as they fled Beijing during the chaos at the fall of the Qing dynasty. He saw the piece again in 1927 at a birthday party where it was shown by one of the guests. Gongchao told his mother about this, and she shared more words of her late husband: that the handscroll had been assembled from fragments of Fu Shan's drafts by Fu's pupils. Gongchao eventually acquired the piece by trading a work by a later artist.

This handscroll collects in a single work the various styles of calligraphy Fu Shan employed; it includes examples of standard (kaishu), clerical (lishu), seal (zhuanshu), semicursive (xingshu), and cursive (caoshu) scripts. Consisting of thirty handwritten pages of poetry, verse, and informal essays and other prose, this scroll also exemplifies Fu's range as an author. Some of these writings are not complete; in others ancient characters unrelated to the actual text, along with other marks and corrections, are placed between the rows.
