The year following Abraham Lincoln's assassination, witnesses Major Henry Rathbone and Clara Harris were married. By the time Henry Rathbone was assigned to work as a diplomat in Hanover, Germany, he and his wife had three children. There, Rathbone--tormented by paranoia and delusions--stabbed his wife to death in December 1883. He spent the rest of his life in an asylum until his death in 1911.
