Colony of Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus aureus lives naturally on our skin and up our nose. While completely harmless in these environments, it can cause serious infections when introduced to the bloodstream via a cut or scrape. Its Latin name means ‘golden bunch of grapes’, alluding to its appearance under a microscope.
