The legendary figure Orestes, son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, avenged the death of his father at the hands of his mother and her lover by murdering them in turn. On this vase one of the Erinyes, or Furies, is pursuing Orestes as he seeks to be purified of his blood guilt by Apollo and Artemis, who stand at left.
