This watercolor is likely an image of Quanah Parker, the last Comanche chief to be recognized by the United States government. He died in 1911. Monroe Tsatoke was one of a group of Native American artists who arrived at the University of Oklahoma’s School of Art in the mid-1920s and made a name for themselves as the Kiowa Five. Their emergence corresponded with the early 20th-century national and international regard for Native American art.
