Comb

Museo Bagatti Valsecchi

Museo Bagatti Valsecchi
Milano, Italia

The comb has teeth on the two long opposing edges while at the center it has perforated designs and a lover's emblem: a hand that pierces a heart with Cupid's dart, a small flower, and the motto "pi-tie ayes-de moy". Boxwood, a compact and hard wood, began to be used instead of ivory the the area north of the Alps at the end of the 15th century. Probably purchased by the brothers Fausto and Giuseppe at the end of the 19th century, the perfectly preserved comb and its similars in the collection are still displayed--as are all other objects in the museum--in their original place/s, thus contributing to the authentic "time capsule" ambiance.
