Teen pop phenomenon Britney Spears attempted to bridge the gap between the kid-music market and more mature popular music with this, her third album, titled simply Britney. After entering the entertainment industry at the age of eight, Britney Spears landed a spot on "The New Mickey Mouse Club" at the ripe old age of 11, in 1993. By the late 1990s she had embarked on a solo music career, releasing her first album, Baby One More Time, in 1999. After a nationwide promotional tour, the album debuted at the top of the charts, becoming the best-selling album ever released by a teenage girl. The following year she repeated that performance with her second album, Oops, I Did It Again, which sold an unprecedented 1,319,193 copies in its first week of sales alone. Her 2001 release, Britney, marks an effort to move out of the teen-pop genre and create a more mature persona with hits like "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" and "Overprotected." If selling records is any indication, it worked: she sold four million copies by the end of the year.
