Early 18th c Butterfield type brass octagonal compass. Dial is signed "Butterfield A Paris." Folding bird gnomon with latitudes 40-60 degrees. Obverse engraved with hour scales for latitudes 43, 49, and 52 degrees. Compass with fine blued-iron needle. North marked with fleur-de-lys. Underside engraved with latitudes of 19 continental towns and cities. 1 brass leg for balancing. Documented as being descended from the Earl of Tredegar, the Wales' family, and through Lady Blanche Hoaire to the Earl of Carrick, Ireland.
