Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel was a Spanish sailor and cosmographer who taught at the Royal Company of Midshipmen in Cádiz, eventually becoming its director. While there, he wrote the Compendio de la Geometría Elemental y Trigonometría rectilínea: para el uso de los Cavalleros Guardias-Marinas en su academia. Escrito por Don Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel, Theniente de Navio de la Real Armada, y Director de la misma Academia, published by the Company's printing house.
The work is divided into 3 parts: the first on lines, the second on surface areas, and the third on solids.
Before the Royal Company was founded, mathematics and geometry had hardly been studied, except at the House of Commerce, the Royal Seminary College of San Telmo, and the Imperial College of Madrid. Most universities lacked the staff to teach these subjects, and there were no Academies of Science to develop them. The Royal Company of Midshipmen addressed this deficiency in its syllabus, placing great importance on these fields as part of the seamen's training.
