A student at the Bauhaus in Germany, Drewes studied with Wassily Kandinsky, Lionel Feininger, Paul Klee, and Oscar Schlemmer. This work was painted four years after he moved to New York to pursue his career in painting. In his paintings and prints, Drewes explored the formal possibilities of color and line, often using abstract forms to suggest human emotions.
