Hellesen moved to Paris after only one year at the art academy in Christiania (today's Oslo). In Paris, he continued his studies with Fernand Léger, whose style was something totally different from his teachers in Christiania, he was an avant-gardist and painted in an impressionistic, cubistic and abstract style. We can see the influence of his teacher in Hellesens art, which is cubistic and decorative.
