The top of this microscope tube slides into another one housing the eyepiece. At the bottom is a revolver that holds 3 lenses, which can be easily swapped by rotating it. The entire tube is supported at the end of the arm. A rack mechanism moves it vertically for macroscopic focusing. There is also a smaller side screw marked in increments from 0 to 160, which allows the tube to slide a micrometer at a time for fine focusing.
The arm or pillar is concave with a square stage at the bottom that has 2 clips to hold the sample in place. There is a hole in the center under which the condenser and iris-type diaphragm are placed. There is a double triangular pillar supporting the arm and microscope body. On its front is a plano-concave mirror. The pedestal and arm are joined with a screw that allows the instrument to tilt.
The base is horseshoe-shaped with blunt-ended, cuboid limbs that are slightly concave. The inscription on the front of the tube reveals the manufacturer and microscope serial number: "Winkel-Zeiss. Gottingen. Nº 69050." This suggests that it was made around 1948 because the factory was renamed "Zeiss-Winkel" in 1949.
