The tube has the eyepiece and lens at each end. It is supported on a cuboid pillar with a rack mechanism on the front, which is controlled by a screw that moves the tube vertically for macroscopic focusing. Fine focusing is controlled using a screw at the top of the pillar, while at its base there is a mirror support and magnifying glass. The pillar is joined to a cylindrical pedestal using an articulated joint system that allows the instrument to tilt. The base is a tripod with 3 legs that fold so it can be put into its case. One of them bears the inscription: "Dollond. London."
