A new political order was created at the Congress of Vienna in 1814–15 after Napoleon's defeat. The picture shows the most important persons of the congress: at the left edge of the picture stands the English envoy, the Duke of Wellington. In front of him sits the Prussian Chancellor Hardenberg; in the foreground stands Prince Metternich, the representative of Austria. On the right next to him is the Russian representative Count Nesselrode. In the background the British Foreign Minister, Castlereagh, stands under the picture, and at the right edge of the picture is the representative of France, Talleyrand, as well as the Russian authorized representative, Count Stackelberg.
