Crane likely began visiting Old Lyme, Connecticut, during the first decade of the 20th century. Unlike many of the other artists who worked there, including Childe Hassam, he focused on the region's marshes and meadows rather than its picturesque early American architecture or famous Bow Bridge. Like other tonalist painters, he often made winterscapes, like this one.
