Console Table

Unknownabout 1715–1720

The J. Paul Getty Museum

The J. Paul Getty Museum
Los Angeles, United States

An artisan carved this table in a curious combination of styles. Sphinx-like monsters, trelliswork, and broad, pierced C-scrolls, which were associated with the Régence style, form the frieze and legs. The stretcher connecting the lower legs, however, is carved in the later, asymmetrical Rococo style, which reached the height of its popularity by the 1750s.

The coat of arms on the frieze may belong to the Blainville family, descendants of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, who was Minister of Arts under Louis XIV.
