Social clubs were distinct from benevolent associations in that they did not raise money for the benefit of members but rather focused on member's social activities. This constitution for the Violet Social Club states that it was "organized for the purpose of enjoyments, such as given balls, Picnics, Entertainments, receptions just as the majority do determine for her future benefit and own welfare."
