In the fall of 1924, boxing promoter George Lewis “Tex” Rickard and circus entrepreneur John Ringling approached Jim Stewart about constructing the new Madison Square Garden they were planning. Despite a significant funding shortfall, Stewart was sold on the venture’s profit potential and agreed to take on the contracting job. The arena rose in an astonishing 249 days—and might have been completed even earlier had significant alterations not been necessary to accommodate ice hockey.
