Airfix, founded in 1939 by Nicholas Kove, initially manufactured rubber inflated toys. Following World War II, the company produced plastic combs, kits, and toy figures. In the early 1960s, Airfix introduced Betta Bilda plastic scale model kits. The kits resembled LEGO sets, but instead of the angled versions of standard blocks for roofing supplied by LEGO, Betta Bilda created a solution for how to build slanted roofs using a block-based model. Many other manufacturers of building block sets supplied folding pieces of printed card for the roof structure, while Betta Bilda invented a dedicated roofing system using angled blocks for roof supports and roof tiles.
