At the turn of the century, Harry and Arthur Saunders started a mill woodworking business in North Waterford, Maine. They initially made dowels from white and yellow birch. When a fire destroyed the original mill in 1916, the brothers moved the business to Westbrook, Maine. In a memo printed on the box of the company’s Satellite City toy, Chairman Donald K. Saunders noted “Recently we recognized that our samples might provide some added fun for customers and associates. To our delight we discovered that a variety of wood products might well serve the creation of a model SATELLITE CITY.” The company continues to manufacture toy wheels, checkers, floor plugs, balls, beads, shaker pegs, beano markers, and wooden nickels.
