Albert Schoenhut started his own toy piano company in 1872. The company soon expanded to make additional musical instruments, wooden dolls, circus figures, and push and pull toys, among others. In a 1919 advertisement, the company marketed itself as "American Ingenuity and Invention" and told consumers to "look for the Schoenhut name ... every Schoenhut Toy means education cleverly interwoven with amusement." Before World War I, the A. Schoenhut Company in Philadelphia was the largest toy company in the country.
