After the Roman general Scipio captured the city of New Carthage, Spain, his troops brought him a woman of astonishing beauty as a spoil of war. In the painting, Scipio is depicted graciously returning the maiden to her fiancé. The general’s self-restraint and benevolence contrast starkly with the horrific surrounding images, which convey the devastation caused by the battle.
