The facial features of the two women are only vaguely hinted in this composition sketch, but the place where they are sitting can easily be identified as the artist's own parlour, the West Room of Anchers Hus, with the mahogany framed couch and the painting Girl with the sunflowers above. From the dapples of light on the wall behind them, we can tell that it must be afternoon or evening.
