The picture was painted in Paris in the summer of 1896 in the apartment of Alfred Nossig - a sculptor, writer and journalist, author of the libretto to Ignacy Paderewski's opera "Manru".
It shows a group of people gathered around an invisible piece of furniture: a sofa or armchair, and perhaps a table covered with a rug. From the left, these are: Miss Jadwiga (Mehoffer's future wife) and Wanda Janakowski, Róża and Alfred Nossig, and Henryk Opieński - violinist, composer and musicologist, friends with the painter from school years.
