Matanga was a beautiful and passionate young lady born into the sudra caste of India. One day, due to her feelings for Ananda, the Buddha's attendant, she lured him into her home and tried to seduce him with sweet words and flattery. When the young Ananda was helpless against her advances, Manjusri Bodhisattva suddenly appeared and brought him back to the Sangha. Matanga chased after them and demanded that the Buddha return Ananda to her. The Buddha told her, Ananda is a person who has achieved attainments. If you want to marry him, you must first live within the Sangha until your level of cultivation equals to that of Ananda. Only then, will you be a fit match." After a period of cultivation in the Sangha, Matanga became enlightened. She realized that lust was the source of suffering, while only Dharma joy could bring ultimate peace and happiness.
