Chiswick House villa and garden were created in the early 18th century. Largely designed by the third Earl of Burlington, it incorporates ideas and designs by the architect, landscape architect and designer William Kent.

The 18th-century stone Doric column sited in the garden originally supported a copy of the statue of the Venus de Medici - a favourite feature in many European gardens. At some point the statue was removed. A replacement by Andrian Melka was installed in 2009.
