Corbel with a caryatid

This corbel belongs to a series of seven elements displayed on
the central wall of Hall 11 of the Museum, known as the "Sala dei
Ducali". The sculptures
collected here date back to the first half of the fifteenth century, a period
of transition between late Gothic and the new Renaissance canons. The variety
of different regional and stylistic references of the works is characteristic
of the construction site of Milan Cathedral, which opened up Milanese culture
to Tuscan, Venetian and above all to Transalpine influences. This corbel with caryatid has soft rounded
volumes, features linked both to Tuscan culture and to the work of the Ticino
sculptors active in those years.
