Commissioned by the oblate nuns of Sant'Egidio, the church annexed to the Santa Maria Nuova hospital, this altarpiece (1434-35) included in its predella paintings of the Wedding and the Burial of the Virgin, now in San Marco. With a style between Gothic and Renaissance, Beato Angelico depicts the moment when Christ adorns the Virgin's regal crown with a gem. Though the painting came to the Uffizi in 1825, it has been displayed in the Gallery since 1948.
