In the last years of his artistic career, which he spent in Rome (having settled there definitively in 1826), Domingos Sequeira attained moments of great creative freedom. Religious themes, which had always been a part of his artistic work, were transformed during this period into visions of profound spirituality.
The theme of the Coronation of the Virgin is not mentioned in the holy scriptures, appearing only much later and becoming increasingly popular from the late Middle Ages onwards. Sequeira transformed this subject here into a dazzling and radiant vision of the hereafter, offering our imagination the chance to contemplate an unreal and sublime world.
