Coronet worn to the coronation of George V

This coronet was worn by Bessie Louise Cameron, Viscountess Mount Morres (1863-1951), at the coronation of George V (1865-1936) in Westminster Abbey on 22 June 1911. Following a tradition that dates back at least 400 years, it would have been worn along with a red coronation robe.

It is decorated with sixteen silver balls, showing Bessie's position as a Viscountess. As part of the coronation ceremony, she would have placed it on her head only after the new sovereign had been crowned. It would have been attached to her head with two gilt pins, through holes on either side of the coronet. One of these holes can be seen in the coronet amongst the white ermine (fur from the winter coat of the stoat) trim that surrounds the base. The coronet has a hallmark with the date 1911.
