Corpus Christi Altarpiece

The Corpus Christi altarpiece is considered the most important Baroque piece of furniture in Mallorca. It was created between 1626 and 1655 by the Mallorcan sculptors Jaume and Rafel Blanquer, and commissioned by the Anglès family. Much of the iconographic program is dedicated to the institution of the Holy Eucharist and is linked to the family that commissioned it.

In the predella, Jesus is depicted in the center before the council of senators and lawyers in the house of the priest Caiaphas and before Pilate in his own house. On either side are two sculptures: Saint Nympha, on the left, and Saint Christina, on the right. In the central panel of the altarpiece, the scene of the Last Supper is depicted, and in the side panels are the sculptures of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Matthias. On the next level, we find the scene of Jesus' first offering, and on either side, the sculptures of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Francis of Paola. In the attic, the temptations of Saint Anthony Abbot are depicted, in reference to the patron, also named Anthony. The altar frontal, with scenes from the life of Abraham, is also noteworthy.
