The German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller published a world map, “Universalis Cosmographia”, in 1507. It became particularly well-known subsequently because it contained the name America (for South America) for the first time. The “Cosmographiae Introductio” was published to accompany the map, and was also intended to communicate the geographical and astronomical fundamentals necessary for its understanding, and was correspondingly richly illustrated. Its authorship is often attributed to Matthias Ringmann (instead of M. Waldseemüller). The Austrian National Library holds a number of editions of this work, including this one from Venice dated 1533.
