Heneage Finch, Fourth
Earl of Aylesford (1751-1812), produced many monochrome pen and wash drawings
and was also a talented etcher. As the growth of industrialisation in the late 1700s
produced pollution and overcrowded cities, Finch offered an idealised and quiet
vision of rural scenes, often featuring cottages and buildings entangled by vegetation.
