In the wake of the Easter Rising, hundreds of prisoners were held in Kilmainham Gaol. Fourteen were executed between Wednesday 3 and Friday 12 May, including all seven signatories of the Proclamation. One of these, Joseph Plunkett, was permitted to marry his fiancée, Grace Gifford, on the night before his execution on Thursday, 4 May 1916.
