Banyalbufar's name comes from a combination of Arabic and Catalan and means 'nestled in the sea'. This area was inhabited and cultivated by the Arabs in the 10th century, who built nearly 2,000 houses on the slopes of the mountain and an aqueduct irrigation system, which is still in operation.
