Covered box with Tuttle Shell

UnknownJoseon Dynasty, 19th century

Horim Museum

Horim Museum
Seoul, South Korea

This box was covered with finely ground hawksbill turtle shell. Hawksbill turtles were extremely rare in Korea, as they are mainly found in subtropical oceans. However, this box has a relatively thick layer of hawksbill shell. It largely consists of triangular pieces, and the gaps were filled with copper. The geometric shapes and the natural texture of hawksbill shells seem to be abstract and modern.
