In 1622 the engraver Georg Schwanhardt (1601–1667) set up a Glass engraving workshop in Nuremberg and thus established a tradition lasting 100 years in his native city. The common feature of most Nuremberg Glass vessels is the Glass itself: tall goblets that with their delicacy and perfect form are masterpieces of the art of Glassblowing. However, to this day it is unclear where the Nuremberg engravers sourced their Glass. Intricate landscapes particularly stand out from the wide variety of themes Glass engravers availed themselves of. Hans Wolfgang Schmidt was able to lend these scenes, engraved very lightly into the Glass, depth and atmosphere with fine gradations in the polished finish. The lid is not the original that came with the goblet. (Dedo von Kerssenbrock-Krosigk)
