An Illinois native, Hunter moved to New Mexico when young, later studying at the Denver Art Academy, the Art Institute of Chicago, and with Stanton McDonald-Wright at Los Angeles. He lived at Farwell, Texas, and Texico, New Mexico, in the early 1930s, and developed friendships with several Dallas artists. From 1935 to 1942 he was director of the WPA Federal Arts Project in New Mexico, and from 1948 to 1952 was administrative director for the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. Later, he was director of the Roswell Museum and Art Center, Roswell, New Mexico. Conservation funded by Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Buddy Stephens
