Japan has a legacy of traditional repair techniques called kintsugi and kinzukuroi, in which the broken, cracked, and missing pieces are reattached, and sometimes replaced, using lacquer, then covered with gold or silver powder. These techniques do not cover up the damaged parts but turn the story they tell into decorations that bring out the true beauty of an object.
