Charles Crandall invented his blocks after watching his children play with the interlocking finger joints used on box corners. The tongue-and-groove connectors of this toy enabled a wide variety of elegant and creative structures. Crandall took an active role in marketing his
blocks, including the placement of an elaborate palace structure at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
