A graduate of the Design institute in Koszalin, Gackowska completed her Masters at Poland’s Academy of Fine Arts in Poland and Finland’s Saimaa University. Her bold, unconventional approach transforms materials such as stone and bio-resin into strikingly mature pieces.
The shattered surfaces of this four-part series of hematite brooches hold up a mirror to their creator’s unpredictable stream of thought. Traditionally a place for small painted portraits, each oval cameo is fractured, creating a condensed picture of sublime ruin instead. The use of blood-like iron oxide is a transcendental intimation of human frailty, but by experimenting with her materials, Gackowska allows each unique piece to speak their own language.
