Gloria arrived in New York city as a young, aspiring journalist. In the 1960s, however, it was hard to come by writing assignments outside the bounds of fashion and lifestyle fluff pieces. Gloria attests that this article, written for The New York Times Magazine, "was the low point of my lack of spine... but I needed to pay the rent, so I did it."

Still, Gloria thinks it's worth reflecting on her least favorite articles and early assignments: "Some editors seem to feel that women, have built-in expertise on all feminine things—which leads to turning down some fascinating topics, like the evolution of hats, or why there are few designers for the middle-aged (who cares?) — but some of it is interesting, especially now that the feminine role is in such flux."
