The history of the theatre is closely linked to that of the Accademia degli Immbili, which was established in 1651 and was composed of a group of Florentine nobles. The crest of the Accademia, a windmill bearing the motto "in sua movenza è fermo" (in its movement it is stable) simbolizes the fact that all the actions of the Immobili "however spirited and lively they may be, are always solidly founded on the stability of virtue".
