At least on the ships of the North German Lloyd (NDL) the emigrants were allowed to stay on deck during the day - except during storms - and to get some fresh air.

Richard Fleischhut was on-board photographer of the NDL from 1905 to 1939. On more than 150 trips, he documented overseas passages and cruises of almost all large passenger steamers of the shipping company with his camera.
