This oversized crown was probably mounted on a cloth base, rather than actually worn. The elements that extend from it evoke feather crests, a common decoration of pre-Hispanic headdresses, while the pendants, another interesting element, were probably meant to jingle when moving. Copper gilding was realized through an electrochemical process that the ancient goldsmiths of Peru’s Northern Coast had refined well before the European discovery of batteries.
