In the course of the archaeological excavation in the Crypt of
the Portico, in both ends of the pseudotransept, a series of
pieces that would have been part of a cycle dedicated to the
Massacre of the Innocents were unexpectedly found. Their
provenance is unknown, however it is thought to be related
with a chapel or altar which would have been disassembled
shortly before the restoration of the Crypt, carried out in the
beginning of the 17th century.
A beautiful bearded and crowned head was found in the course
of the excavation of the Portico of Glory Crypt, embedded in the
northern area of the pseudotransept. Its style and features
display a reminiscence of Master Mateo's work, so perhaps this
piece also belongs to this sculpture.
