  Campi produced several small devotional works dedicated to the theme of the
  Passion, of which this panel is one of them.
  The
  painting arouses a strong emotional tension, partly due to the colour range
  that is restricted and almost monochrome.
This chromatic choice is rare in Bernardino's painting and may be
attributed to his later work.
