Berlin, Germany

Several wooden crucifixes can be ascribed to Giovanni Pisano on stylistic grounds. Among them is this fragment preserved in Berlin. The attribution and dating are based on the crucifixion reliefs on Giovanni’s marble pulpits in Sant’ Andrea in Pistoia and Pisa Cathedral. This smallformat work expressively conveys the agonizing death of the crucified Christ. The presentation in the round of an almost naked body, based on a dissection-like observation of real life, is unique in the period around 1300. In its spatial presence and monumental impact, the Berlin fragment ranks as the most mature accomplishment of Giovanni’s work in wood carving. All but a few slight traces of the original coloration have been lost.
